My Plan For Continual Improvement - 969 Words

Part of my plan for continual improvement requires me to reflect on ideas yet implemented from my previous individual learning plan. These experiences included inviting more professionals in the community such as our newly organized soccer team, to come and speak to students. Since soccer is embedded deeply in the Hispanic culture, this is a great way to connect to the cultural linguistic learners of my school. Dong (2013) added the ELL’s prior experience is a great resource, which should be included in lessons. Other guest speakers would include plumbers, architects, and engineers giving the students relevancy about schoolwork and real world application. Lastly, activities involving visiting professional worksites and attending a NASA internship program were on the list of self-improvement events with good intentions. Good intentions not acted upon become just good ideas. These ideas never came to fruition for several reasons. Full time instruction, forty hours per week of graduate studies, and two and a half our commutes left little time to explore such wonderful opportunities. In addition, since the start of my degree program my assignment has changed no longer needing many of these resources. However, one activity does relate to my current placement, which is inviting athletes on all levels to share the importance of education upon their chosen field. Scott Fitzgerald in 1927 about corruption, murder and life in the 1920s. The true purpose for a writer to compose any piece of literature is to entertain the reader, and this writer does this to the best of his ability. In this well-crafted tale, Fitzgerald presents a fast moving, exciting story, and to any typical reader it can be enjoyed; however, if the reader takes the time to analyze his words and truly understand his symbolism used, it can transform this account into a completely different entity. In The Great Gatsby, it is apparent that Fitzgerald uses these symbols to provide representations of what life was like during that time, and to help advance the thematic interests in his novel. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, symbolism is defined as The practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects , events, or relationships, and the author uses all varieties of symbols in the text to coax the reader into the true lives and personalities of the characters. Symbolism often allows the reader to better understand the theme and mood that the author is trying to portray. Fitzgerald uses this to show details that cannot be revealed by words alone. Through symbolism, he allows the reader to refer to other, more tangible aspects of life. Throughout this novel, the types of symbolism vary from object to object, but some of the most notable examples of symbolism include the color green, the overall setting, and the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. The use of symbolism throughout this novel not only helps to give the reader insight into the true identities of the characters, but also further accentuates the themes portrayed throughout the novel. One of the more obvious examples of symbolism in this novel is the color green. This is evident from the beginning of the novel, when there is a s mall, flickering green light across the Manhasset Bay, separating the Manhasset Neck, also known as the East Egg, from the Great Neck, also known as the West Egg. One assumption can be made that the green hue of the light represents the envy that Gatsby has of Tom for being married to Daisy. Gatsby wishes that he was still with Daisy, and this light represents his hopes for a bright future, which he hopes to share with Daisy. Another symbolization of the color green is the meaning go. As in a traffic light signal, most people associate green with the word and action go. This can be interpreted as meaning Gatsby should go for his dream without hesitation. It implies that Gatsby and Daisy are meant to be together and nothing should stop Gatsby from his destined happiness and love with Daisy. It inspires hope for Gatsby that he is on the right path, heading towards the best years of his life. He believes that things will soon be as they once were, only better. Green is also the color of money, and the color of the interior of Gatsbys superfluous car. Gatsby drives a cream colored Rolls-Royce sedan, with green interior. The car in itself is just a way to show everyone that catches a glance of Gatsby to see just how wealthy he is, and a way to attract attention to himself, especially the attention of Daisy. The color green can be viewed with many perspectives, but Fitzgerald uses it to represent a plethora of concepts. The setting is another aspects that Fitzgerald utilizes as a symbol to further enhance the important themes presented in The Great Gatsby. The Valley of Ashes represents the poverty in America in the 1920s and how filthy and corrupted some peoples lives were. All of the characters in the book go to the Valley of Ashes to commit sin or illegal acts. The East Egg (home of the Buchanans) represents old-wealth as opposed to new-wealth. Most of the East Egg residents have inherited their money from their ancestors or an old friend, as in the case of Gatsby, who inherited his money from Dan Cody, a man whom he met while working as a fisherman on Lake Superior. Gatsby tries to impress everyone in the community by having small, elegant parties, which are actually very large, and most of the time the guests are uninvited. Nick emphasizes this point when he states I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsbys house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were no t invited they went there (p. 41). These people are considered to be sophisticated and rich in the blood. The old-wealth dominated the social ladder during the 1920s. These people were often stuck-up and immoralistic. They did not know what it was like to be in poverty and they were very, very selfish. The West Egg, on the other hand, represents, new-wealth. The West Egg residents were people with newly acquired wealth, of the sort of self-made millionaires. These people were often thought to be foolish in their spending and were viewed very suspiciously. Several people that lived in the West Egg did not really have an opinion about society. The people in the West Egg were far more moralistic than the residents of the East Egg because they had lived less affluent lives during their childhood and early adulthood. Also, since they have not been thrown money since the day they were born, they cherish what they do have, and work to make their lives easier, and work to let their childre n live more prosperous lives than they were able to live. From the symbolism in the settings, Fitzgerald helps to give a clearer understanding of the themes of poverty, old-wealth and new-wealth involved in the novel. Another outstanding instance of symbolism in this novel are the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. Overlooking the Valley of Ashes is an old, eroding billboard, featuring the aforementioned doctor. They eyes used to be distinct, and well detailed, but as time has passed, the billboard itself, as well as the portrait, have faded and deteriorated, just as they seem to peer down on the faded ideals of America. The eyes are simply an unsettling, unexplained image, as they stare down on the Valley of Ashes, until George Wilson explains thatGod knows what youve been doing, everything youve been doing. You may fool me but you cant fool God! Standing behind him Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, which had just emerged pale and eno rmous from the dissolving night. God sees everything, repeated Wilson. (p.167). After this statement, the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg work to emphasize the lack of a fixed relation between symbols and the things they symbolize; they could mean anything to any observer, but they tend to make observers feel as though they are the ones being scrutinized. They seem to stare down at the world without the need for meaning that drives the human characters of the novel. Through Fitzgeralds wording in describing the image of Eckleburgs eyes the reader develops a mental image of an almighty being who is constantly watching over the land. The reader discerns that the eyes not only see everything but that they eyes are morbidly unhappy. As seen in previous examples of American literature, the Christ figure is depicted through one of the characters, but in this case, God is presented into a story lacking true morals through the eyes of a billboard doctor. The eyes not only symbolize a god-like be ing but also Fitzgerald himself and his negative views of 1920s society. The eyes look down on the Valley of Ashes in disgust, just as the author believes God is looking down at society negatively, and it seems that whenever someone goes to the Valley of Ashes to commit a sin, the eyes are watching over them, in an attempt to cause them to feel uncomfortable. Through the mind of any other author, an old, withered billboard would just be another piece of scenery, but for F. Hobbes and Locke Essay Thomas Hobbes and John Locke both sought to explain the behavior of humans in the purest form. In comparing and contrasting their theories, one begins to realize the extent to which these philosophers agreed and disagreed. While Hobbes states that human nature is malicious and requires a sovereign, Locke explains how humans are benelovant and pastoral with no motivation to advance. In Hobbes’ theory of a natural state, people live with no sense of government or law, forcing society into chaos and a war where â€Å"every man [is] against every man† (Hobbes 1651:3). Without the constraints of an institution, people begin to reveal their most unpleasant virtues. The three â€Å"principal causes of quarrel† include competition, diffidence and glory (Hobbes 1651:2). In order to control these causes, Hobbes proposes a sovereign with the ability to preside over all. He proposes a Leviathan with which the people can create a social contract and increase their probability of self-preservation. In return for its protection, the Leviathan assumes the power over all through violence, resulting in contracts of fear. Ensuing from the contract with the Leviathan, society understands that â€Å"a kingdom divided in itself cannot stand† (Hobbes 1651:7). Similar to the covenant between Rome and the Romans, however, if their sovereign fails to uphold its conditions of safety and security, the commonwealth can justify his disposal. In summary, Hobbes’ believes that a successful society is one that prevents people from experiencing complete freedom, simply because they cannot handle this privilege. In comparison, Locke states that the main concern for society is the placement of property rights. In a natural state, people are equal to one another and thus have no chance to progress. Just as Hobbes recommended the Leviathan, Locke presents the placement of property as an ideal solution. Locke believes that people are able to reason, and therefore understand what is morally right and wrong. This understanding allows resolution of conflicts without an intervening sovereign. Their trouble, however, stems from the inconsistency of their ability to apply these morals when faced with conflict. By appointing property rights, people develop a capitalist style marketplace. Methods of exchange are agreed upon, and therefore each man can benefit from one another. They acknowledge that if a man puts labor into land, it is his own; as he benefits from his own land, he is simultaneously improving the welfare of his entire society. Man is able to apply his rationality and take no more than he needs. In this scenario, one of the greatest differences between Hobbes and Locke is revealed. While Hobbes believes man is merciless, Locke explains it is man’s modesty that prevents him from going to war with his neighbor. In Locke’s society, people are rational, but do not always practice this rationality. Therefore, they must give up a little freedom, in order to gain wealth and acquire benefits. Hobbes and Locke share the idea that in the state of nature, men are equal. Despite man’s equality, both philosophers also believe man is constantly at risk of endangering himself. Where their theories contrast is in the definition of a social contract and with whom. While Hobbes maintains a negative perspective of war and violence, Locke’s view presents a more positive outlook. While Hobbes puts forth a government with totalitarian values, Locke’s government represents a liberal monarchy. Hobbes believes a social contract exists between a sovereign and his people; he obtains absolute power and cannot be overthrown. In contrast, Locke’s government is conditional and depends on the social contracts between society members. Traits of Hobbes’ natural state are still evident today in some societies. Without fair governments, corrupt populations will attempt to overthrow unjust rulers. A recent example is the 2011 Libyan revolution. Under Mummar Gaddaffi, the Libyan people felt their government was no longer acting in their best interest. Also, the Secretary of the Navy was aboard that morning, and had been present on the bridge prior to his departure at 0807. 14 minutes later, at 0821 according to the deck log, the Eisenhower struck the Spanish bulk carrier Urduliz, which was anchored in a designated anchorage area, â€Å"A,† in berth â€Å"Z.† As stated above, the Eisenhower had not been in Hampton Roads in six months. While deployed in the Mediterranean, the Entrance Reach Channel was narrowed and moved slightly northward on March 30th, 1988.The crew of the Eisenhower was informed of the changes, but had yet to navigate the channel in its new configuration until the morning of August 29th. The track that the Eisenhower was to follow led along the northern edge of the previous configuration of the channel, which should have put her 400 yards off the anchored Urduliz. The history of life on earth has been a history of interaction between living things and their surroundings (Carson 420). Mother Nature is wise. Although all creatures have been given the proper habitats and basic needs to live, earth also provided organisms that would limit each species’ reproduction so that a healthy balance is acquired. This equilibrium has given peace on earth until man had learned to use his mind to alter his environment. The want for a better and comfortable life has always been man’s weakness. This has been the reason why history shows that different cultures have tried to get the best of other worlds into their own lands. Plants and animals have been imported by different countries to adapt these creatures to another culture’s different needs. However, this has destroyed the balance that nature had intended and has resulted to negative effects such as the transportation of unneeded microorganisms. Carson explains that each organism has counter creatures and aspects in its natural habitat that limit its population to the number that is needed to balance the environment it belongs to. Whenever an organism is transported to another place, there is no guarantee that the new habitat will be able to control its population. This, therefore, can become a threat to its new environment in the form of pests or even epidemics. Another reason for imbalance is the farming system that has been developed. When more than the normal quantity of crops are planted in just one place, the insects that are attracted to these also grow in abundance. Therefore, upsetting the natural balance of the environment causes problems like pestilence. Urban lifestyle has also contributed to the problems of insect infestation. In some countries, the natural habitat has been interrupted by the build up of too many houses (and slums) in just a particular piece of land. Irresponsible disposal of garbage and unhealthy habits also give rise to the problem of mosquitoes and other pests. Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane (DDT) has been the first synthetic pesticide that was ever invented to control infestation. Carson believes that this chemical and the other man-made pesticides leave particles on the areas that have been treated and this harms the other parts of the environment. Ronald Bailey (427), an environmental reporter, believes that DDT has been falsely accused of being a carcinogen because research cannot prove that it really does cause cancer. However, environmentalists like Rachel Carson have ignorantly used this premise to increase awareness for our planet. Whether or not DDT is a carcinogen, it is just one of the synthetic materials that have come to dominate human living. Thousands of other inventions using chemicals have brought forth many problems that are not just harmful but also irreversible. Global warming, based on Encyclopaedia Britannica, is an increase in global average surface temperature resulting from an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide (caused by natural emissions of plants and combustion from carbon-containing materials), methane (produced industrially by the destructive distillation of bituminous coal in the manufacture of coal gas), and certain other trace gases in the atmosphere. Industrial emissions and smoke belching automobiles are being blamed for this phenomenon. This has caused a lot of controversy because it means that the earth is becoming too warm for human existence. However, according to climate scientists, human activities have very little effect on the climate, compared to many other factors, from volcanoes to clouds. These researchers claim that with or without man’s inventions, nature has its own causes of global temperature changes. However, whether or not pesticides are carcinogens and even if global-warming is a doubtful issue, our environment is a very important place that all must protect from abuse and misuse. Pesticides may not be immediately fatal for humans but to comply with universal laws, there is a need to use these in moderation. Anything overdone can lead to serious consequences such as food poisoning and allergies. Industrial wastes, even if they apparently do not really affect global-warming, can still cause pollution that leads to many health issues. The earth is the only home for us human beings. It is where we get our food and breathe the air that we need to survive. It provides us with the shelter we need to protect ourselves from the harsh realities of our own habitat. We need to find ways to start ensuring the safety of our environment against man’s drive to improve lives by ignoring possible negative consequences. The European nations are a model right now for environmental protection. Car companies need to recall their older less-functional models so that these can be recycled into new products for their later models. Other electronic gadgets like personal computers and mobile telephones are also being eyed for this project. Forced to recover value from their discarded consumer goods, companies will have a strong incentive to design the toxics out of their products and to make them easier to disassemble and remanufacture (Greider 3). As students, there are many ways that we can also help protect the environment. Compare and Contrast Education is something so sacred to some people but there are many people that take it for granted as well. â€Å"The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me† by Sherman Alexie and â€Å"Learning to Read and Write† by Fredrick Douglass, is similar in many ways. Both of these men were so eager to learn when in the meantime so many people that do have the opportunity are so clueless. People are so clueless that there were others, and still are, that wish they were in a position to easily learn. Both of these men were minorities and grew up many years ago where learning was unusual.In their situation it was also forbidden in some ways. Although it was tough for both of them, they both felt compelled to take learning into their own hands. Alexie refused to be like others and Douglass did as well. Both of these men went through an astonishing experience to discover what they did. Not only did they both learn that education is something pleasurable, b ut they learned that it was difficult. Alexie, at three years old, started to teach himself how to read using a Superman comic book. He was quite a prodigy. Native-Americans were stereotypically supposed to fail in the classroom.Although they are different in so many ways, they are also alike in a many ways, Douglass taught himself and Alexie did the same. Although they taught themselves in different ways, they still did. That's what makes them alike. Slaves weren't allowed to read or write and Indians were considered outsiders if they did. Alexie being a Native American and Douglass being a slave, they were both outsiders. Growing up an Indian on a Reservation, not much was expected of Alexie in the knowledge department. â€Å"We were Indian children who were expected to be stupid† (p. 17). Alexie was different.He had a great mind and wanted to put it to use unlike the other Indians. He loved to learn. Alexie was considered an outsider from the Native Americans because he lo ved to learn. Alexie says, â€Å"I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky. † (p. 17). Even if it made Alexie an outsider or not getting along with his peers, he was still inspired. Even if it did mean he would fight with his classmates he did not give up his passion for reading. In his joy, however, there was also pain. Alexie writes, â€Å"I read with equal parts joy and desperation. I loved those books, but I also knew that love had only one purpose.It was trying to save my life† (p. 18) . Sherman Alexie didn't just want to be considered â€Å"a dumb Indian,† like all the other Native Americans. He wanted to be smart and have a better life for himself. He wasn't going to let the color of his skin or where he was born stop him from excelling in life. Fredrick Douglass was first introduced to reading in writing by his masters mistress. Douglass was an African-American slave. Although his master didn't let his mistress teach Douglass, he didn't give up. He was de dicated and took matters into his own hands this mistress gave up on him.He started learning to write and read. Douglass figured out how to read and write in the most unconventional ways. He traded bread for lessons from schooled poor white boys, and figured out how to write by looking at letters on timber in a ship-yard. Once he had attained those skills, Douglass was met with great desperation. He explains: â€Å"As I read and contemplated the subject (of slavery), behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish.As I writhed under it, I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy. It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out. In moments of agony, I envied my fellow-slaves for their stupidity †¦ I often found myself regr etting my own existence, and wishing myself dead; and but for the hope of being free, I have no doubt that I should have killed myself, or done something for which I should have been killed† (p. 132).Through his learning, Douglass soon realized that he was not destined to have the lives of the men he read about in books as he would be a slave for life. He wondered if his education had been a curse rather than a gift, and envied the ignorance of his fellow slaves who did not have to feel the same pain that he did. Both of these men realize that the life they thought the had ahead of them wasn't the outcome. That wasn't what they wanted. These men both hoped for the same thing. Sherman Alexie and Frederick Douglass’s essays both raise the question: In certain situations, is ignorance really bliss?Or is it better to be educated and know the truth, rather than live a life in a vacuum devoid of information or any means of achieving access to the world beyond your immediate c ommunity? This is a question one must learn themselves. Education can be both pleasurable and painful. For Alexie and Douglass both, education opened their eyes to the harsh reality of the world. And yet they contributed greatly to it through their own writings. Whether or not one wishes to keep this world closed, is up to each individual.Only you can decide whether or not to take risk of some pain in acquiring knowledge in order to have the opportunity to contribute to the world. Both Sherman Alexie and Frederick Douglass’s essays are inspiring and open-minded to read. Islamic Influences in the Middle East Free Online Research Papers The inception of the Islamic religion resulted from a series of revelations that Muhammad, who is considered by Muslims to be the last of a line of prophets, received from Allah dating back to the year 610. Islam, with the Qur’an acting as its guide, has since transformed from a religion into a complete way of life for Muslims. This way of life made a great impact on the early development of the Middle East and continues to have a lasting impression on the politics and culture of the Arab nations. Before the revelations of Muhammad in the 600’s, the Middle Eastern territories weren’t any different than the European nations at this time. Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Anatolia were all united politically and culturally with the rest of the Greco-Roman world under the leadership of Constantinople while the Mesopotamia valley divided the Byzantine and Persian Empires. The spread of Muhammad’s messages soon became unpopular with the power-elite in the city of Mecca so he and his followers emigrated from Mecca to the city of Medina. The emigration, which is thought to have officially started Islamic history, was just the beginning of what soon resulted in Muhammad gaining control of most of the Arab land for the sake of Islam. They occupied Palestine in 636, Mesopotamia in 637, Syria and Egypt in 640 and Persia in 642. The majority of the population in the areas conquered by Muhammad’s followers converted to Islam, creating a permanent cultural frontier between Europe and the Muslim world. During this time period of Islamic expansion, the Islamic Middle Eastern cities became the centers of cultural and economic activity in western Eurasia. Cities like Baghdad became largely populated due to this expansion boosting a successful trading economy and rich cultural life. The Middle Eastern Islamic societies soon became considered among the elite due to the fact that literature, architecture, medicine and science were far in advance of anything established in Western Europe. Today there is an estimated 1.3 billion Muslims in the world with 18 percent still living in the Middle East. Even though the majority of Muslims live in Eastern Asia, the Islamic ideals still dominate Middle Eastern politics. In recent times Islam has been viewed in a negative light due to Islamic Extreme groups who have successfully completed numerous terrorist operations for the sake of their Islamic views. Because of these groups, many countries have issued a War on Terrorism to help eliminate such terrorist activities as well as punish countries that help fund and support them. Unfortunately most Muslims do not share these same extremist views yet their Islamic views are associated with them.
